Our HISTORY & Philosophy
Our story began as Artisan Homes in 1987. Our first commercial contract was a referral from a residential customer in 1989. We incorporated in 1996 as WWL, Inc. dba Artisan Construction, Inc. and began growing the commercial side of our company. At various times we’ve emphasized the commercial or residential side of our business; we believe this diverse experience provides a unique perspective in helping our clients achieve their goals. Working with homeowners reminds us that each project should be personal and done to a quality that we are all proud of; working with businesses ensures we are continuously conscious of project costs, schedule, and safety.
While our project history includes commercial bid work and production home building, we find our true talents shine through negotiated work. We pride ourselves on complete openness about our process, especially about budget and schedule. As you review our website, you'll see numerous repeat clients. We believe our transparent process coupled with our problem solving partnership approach is why these relationships are so strong. Some names and faces may have changed over the years, however, Artisan's dedication and commitment to quality work at a fair price remains constant.

IT'S ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville (HFHGC)
Artisan and its employees are proud to support Habitat for Humanity. Giving back to the Charlottesville's community is very important to our company, and being a part of individuals and families achieving first-time home ownership is a reward within itself. Artisan was thrilled to sponsor a family during HFHGC's first Builder's Blitz in the Fifeville neighborhood and continues to support HFHGC through the Habitat Store. (Visit cvillehabitat.org for more information on this dream fulfilling organization.)
VA Discovery Museum (VADM)
While partnering on the UVA Hospital interactive display at The Discovery Museum on the downtown mall, Artisan employees found themselves drawn to do more. Carpenters couldn't help but join in to help build the neighboring fire station exhibit and the team then rallied subcontractors and suppliers for donations to construct a custom playhouse that was raffled off at the BRHBA Home Show to benefit the organization. (Visit vadm.org for more information on this amazing learning facility.)
Building Goodness Foundation
This organization connects volunteers from the design and construction industries with vulnerable communities. Artisan employees have also participated in the Christmas in July event with the Building Good Foundation. This event focuses on providing housing repairs to low-income to Charlottesville families. The organization also coordinates construction work on community centers, preschools, and other buildings which serve communities in need both locally and abroad. (Visit buildinggoodness.org for more information on the work they are doing in Virginia.)
Local Youth Groups
With so many of our employees having families, it's not unexpected that parents become volunteers for those activities. Artisan further supports these efforts with small gift-in-kind donations as able. If the school PTO is holding a carnival, we'll provide ear protection for the bounce house room. When we know the Scouts or a classroom are working on a construction adventure, we'll have safety vests and hard hats to lend out. We've even provided space for a Cub Scout Pack to store their pinewood derby, raingutter regatta, & space derby tracks and other supplies.
